Titans crowned One-Day champs

The Multiply Titans were crowned the Momentum One-Day Cup Champions by crushing the Warriors by 236 runs in the final played at SuperSport Park in Centurion on Friday.

Full Scorecard: Titans v Warriors

The hosts posted a mammoth 425 for five in their 50 overs after Albie Morkel had won the toss and elected to bat first. In reply, the Warriors were bundled out for just 189 in 31 overs, handing the One-Day crown to the Titans alongside the T20 crown they won over the same opponents earlier in the season.

It was always going to be a big ask for the visitors to mount a sustainable challenge in chasing 426 in 50 overs and Chris Morris (7-0-41-2) and Lungi Ngidi (5-0-38-2) compounded their problems by claiming three wickets within the first five overs.

Morris made the first breakthrough when he had Gihahn Cloete (3) playing onto his stumps with the total on just eight. Ngidi struck in the next over when he had Colin Ingram edging behind to Heinrich Klaasen for just a single.

Ngidi's next over produced the biggest wicket of them all when Jon-Jon Smuts (13) tried to play the right-arm fast bowler down the ground but was caught by Farhaan Behardien running back from mid-off. At 22 for three, the Warriors were all but out of the title hunt.

Colin Ackermann (39) and Yaseen Vallie (35) mounted a brief challenge with a stand of 47 but then Ackermann tried to flick Junior Dala (6-0-35-2) towards the fine-leg boundary, only to miss the ball and be clean bowled.

Lesiba Ngoepe (18) struck one delightful six down the ground but was unable to build before being caught on the long-off boundary off Tabraiz Shamsi (9-0-31-3). Jerry Nqolo (40) struck two boundaries and a six while Andrew Birch (12) and Sisanda Magala (5) where sent packing quickly.

Shamsi picked up the final wicket of Basheer Walters (1) to send the Titans players into raptures of joy in celebrating their triumph.

TWIN CENTURIES

The Titans' mammoth total was setup thanks to Henry Davids (114) and Aiden Markram (161) as the pair shared in a massive 212-run opening stand. The pair needed just 183 balls for their partnership as the Warriors struggled with their line and length, bowling too full at times.

Davids, who ended the season as the leading run scorer in the tournament with 673 runs from just eight innings, struck 13 boundaries and four maximums off just 98 balls. But the stand was ended in the 30th over when Smuts (9-0-61-1) had Davids caught by Ngoepe on the long-on boundary.

The loss of the first wicket did not deter the home side as Markram, who struck 11 fours and seven sixes, was joined by Klaasen (60) and the pair accelerated the scoring by adding 133 runs off 90 balls for the second wicket.

When Markram departed in the 45th over, the Titans had already amassed 345 runs but the innings went through a wobble as Anrich Nortje (6-0-62-2) grabbed the wickets of Morkel (4) and Behardien (17) in the space of three deliveries.

This did not deter Morris though as the Proteas allrounder smashed six maximums and one boundary in a 12-ball knock to end unbeaten on 47 which boosted the hosts over the 400-run mark. Heino Kuhn (6 not out), who faced just three balls of the sixth-wicket stand, and Morris, added 52 runs off just 14 deliveries to rub salt into the Warriors' wounds.

Smuts, who was a key figure in helping the Warriors reach the final, ended behind Davids on the run charts, scoring 581 runs while Markram leapfrogged into third, ending with 508 runs.

Dala's two wickets enabled him to end top of the bowling charts with 16 wickets thanks to a better average (18.68) than Robbie Frylinck of the Hollywoodbets Dolphins (16 wickets at 22.25) and Shadley van Schalkwyk of the VKB Knights (16 wickets at 29.18).

Shaun von Berg of the Titans, who only played six games, ended with 15 wickets alongside Dillon du Preez of the Knights.
