Titans cruise into MODC final

The Multiply Titans crushed the BuildNat Cape Cobras by six wickets in the Momentum One-Day Cup at SuperSport Park in Centurion on Thursday to book their spot in the final, which will be hosted on this same ground.

Full scorecard: Titans v Cobras

The Titans, chasing 185 for victory, reached 185 for four with still a massive 18.4 overs to spare thanks to Jonathan Vandiar's half century and a stellar bowling performance from Mark Boucher's men.

Vandiar fell with just four runs required for victory after facing 77 deliveries, being caught off the bowling of Dayyaan Galiem (2.2-0-23-1) for 72, which included six boundaries and one six, but Albie Morkel (4 not out) came in and struck a boundary with his first ball to win the game.

Vandiar and Farhaan Behardien (29 not out) set the Titans on the path to victory with an 81-run stand for the fourth wicket after Eddie Leie (10-0-54-3) had given the home side a scare by capturing the wickets of Aiden Markram (49), Heino Kuhn (19) and the prized scalp of AB de Villiers without scoring.

Vandiar and Markram had given the hosts a good start with an opening partnership of 75 before the introduction of Leie gave the visitors a glimmer of hope by trapping Markram in front, as Dane Paterson (8-2-34-0) and Lizaad Williams (4-0-30-0) were unable to make the early breakthrough needed.

But Leie produced the best part of his spell six overs later when he had Kuhn caught by Paterson before getting De Villiers to pop his second ball straight back to the bowler.

At 100 for three, the Cobras might have thought that they might just be able to pull this one of of the fire but Vandiar and Behardien put to rest any fears and set about cementing the Titans' spot in the One Day Cup final.

The Cobras had earlier been bundled out for 184 inside 45 overs after Morkel had won the toss and sent the visitors in to bat first with Lungi Ngidi (8-2-20-2), Junior Dala (8-1-33-2) and Tabraiz Shamsi (9-0-53-2) picking up a brace of wickets each.

Only Aviwe Mgijima (52), Dane Vilas (42) and Galiem (39) were able to make any impact on the scoreboard as the men from Cape Town yet again failed to impress with the willow.

Ngidi and Chris Morris (8-0-21-1) reduced the Capetonians to nine for two in the sixth over by dismissing Andrew Puttick (5) and Andrea Agathangelou (2) respectively before Markram (2-0-9-1) and Dala whipped out Simon Khomari (7) and Zubayr Hamza (8) in successive overs to leave the visitors stranded on 30 for four inside 11 overs.

But Mgijima, who brought up his fourth List A half century in 93 balls, and Vilas steadied the ship somewhat with a stand of 61 for the fifth wicket before Shamsi had Vilas edging to Kuhn behind the stumps.

Galiem and Mgijima continued with the rebuilding phase as they added 65 for the sixth wicket but then the rest of the wheels fell off the rusty Cobras bus.

Once Dala had Galiem caught behind by Kuhn, Ngidi accounted for Niel Botha (1) and then Malusi Siboto (7.5-1-36-1) dismissed Williams (10) before Mgijima succumbed to a straight one from Shamsi to be given out leg before.

The carnage was completed when Paterson (6) was run out by Markram to leave the Cobras stranded rock bottom of the One Day log and their season in tatters.

The Titans will now wait for the qualifier, which takes place on Sunday between either the Warriors, VKB Knights and Hollywoodbets Dolphins, to see who they will face in the final at SuperSport Park.
