Record Frylinck 50 takes Dolphins home

Robbie Frylinck smashed a sensational half century to give the Hollywoodbets Dolphins a come-from-behind five-wicket victory over the Multiply Titans in the opening round of the Momentum One Day Cup at SuperSport Park in Centurion on Friday.

Full scorecard: Titans v Dolphins

Man-of-the-match Frylinck walked out to the crease with the Dolphins still requiring 66 runs from 35 balls and proceeded to score the fastest 50 in Momentum One Day Cup history, bringing up his seventh List A half century off just 19 balls.

Frylinck smashed six boundaries and three sixes to end unbeaten on 54 off 20 balls as the Dolphins scored the winning runs with three balls remaining, ending on 328 for five.

Frylinck was aided by his captain, Khaya Zondo (25 not out), as the pair shared in an unbeaten sixth-wicket partnership of 69 off just 34 balls, thanks mainly to the veteran allrounder.

But the innings was given the impetus it needed by Keshav Maharaj, who struck three boundaries and a six off 22 balls before being caught by Henry Davids on the square leg boundary off David Wiese (9-0-58-1) for 38.

The Dolphins were given a good, solid start by Morne van Wyk (61) and Sarel Erwee (70). The pair put on 117 for the first wicket off 131 balls before Erwee edged behind to Heinrich Klaasen off Junior Dala (7-0-42-1). Van Wyk and Cody Chetty (50) carried on with the good start, adding 53 for the second wicket off 68 balls.

Vaughn van Jaarsveld (15) and Chetty picked up the pace, adding 34 off 27 balls for the third wicket but with Van Jaarsveld and Chetty losing their wickets in the space of two overs, the Titans looked odds-on favourites to open their limited overs account with a victory.

Zondo played the perfect foil for Maharaj and Frylinck, keeping a cool head while picking up singles to give his more aggressive partners as much strike as possible.

The departure of Maharaj brough Frylinck to the crease and the turning point of the game was when the burly right-hander smashed 20 runs off Dala in the 47th over in which Frylinck was put down by Rivaldo Moonsamy on the boundary with 24 runs still to get.

The Titans, who were sent in to bat by Zondo, posted a daunting total of 324 for seven on the back of a massive 153-run opening stand between Davids (87) and Jonathan Vandiar (51).

The momentum of the opening stand was lost somewhat as Davids and then Vandiar both lost their wickets in the space of three deliveries as Mthokozisi Shezi (10-0-78-2) and Calvin Savage (10-0-60-4) made the vital breakthroughs.

But Dean Elgar (34) and Klaasen (17) resurrected things with a 52-run stand for the third wicket.

The Dolphins had bowled badly upfront and ended up conceding 26 extras in their innings but pulled things back in the middle overs, led by Rabian Engelbrecht (10-1-51-0) who was the visitors most economical bowler.

But an excellent and enterprising innings from Moonsamy (68) lifted the Titans over the 300-run mark as the young 20-year old smashed nine boundaries and two maximums before being dismissed by Savage.
