Cobras make it four in a row

An inspired allround team performance by the Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras gave them victory by 37 runs over the Chevrolet Warriors in their Momentum One Day Cup Match at Sahara Park Newlands in Cape Town on Friday.

Full Scorecard – Cobras v Warriors

After earlier winning the toss and batting first the Cobras posted a daunting total of 283 for five, with the Warriors then restricted to 246 for nine in their 50 overs, and denying the Cobras a bonus point.

The Warriors had a patient, but solid start to their innings with Ashwell Prince and Jon-Jon Smuts putting on 93 for the first wicket at 4.68 runs to the over.

Charl Langeveldt had an indifferent start. His first two overs went for only three runs but then his next two went for 21. Johann Louw, on the other hand, kept the pressure on as his open spell of six overs only yielded 22 runs.

The Cobras pacemen were unable to find a breakthrough, so Ontong turned to the leg-spin of Alistair Gray, and the success was immediate. Gray had Smuts trapped lbw for 50 off 64 balls, with nine fours, and a short while later, claimed his second wicket, that of Christiaan Jonker (7).

Jonker tried to pull a ball from Gray, but only succeeded in launching the ball into the stratosphere, where Vallie took an excellent catch as the ball swirled on the way down.

Prince departed shorty thereafter for a well played 66 of 90 balls, which included five boundaries, being trapped in front by the part-time off-spin of Vallie. Once Prince departed, the Warriors annoyingly lost wickets at regular intervals.

Not one of the Warriors middle order was able to contribute significantly to the chase as Davy Jacobs (15) and Colin Ackerman (23) were outdone by a rejuvenated Langeveldt. The 37-year old returned to the attack and bowled beautifully. He had both batsmen playing at balls just outside offstump and feathering them to Dane Vilas.

Craig Thyssen (9) endured some fiery bowling from Lizaad Williams and eventually played onto his own stumps. Williams picked up his second wicket when Ayabulela Gqamane (3) lofted a ball to Louw at mid-on, where he took a dolly of a catch.

Langeveldt then removed Basheer Walters (6) to finish with figures of 10-2-47-2. Williams finished with 2-54 while Gray bowled wonderfully, ending with 2-34. Louw was a little unlucky to only pick up the one wicket, but created the pressure in the batting power play for Langeveldt to pick up the wickets.

Earlier, Stiaan van Zyl, who claimed the man-of-the-match award, scored a well crafted 86 off 111 balls with nine fours. He found support from Richard Levi, who notched up his fourth half century of the season, scoring 83 from 94 deliveries including 13 boundaries and Yaseen Vallie (58).

Ontong blazed 27 off 16 balls at the end of the innings, which included two huge sixes in the last over off Andrew Birch, to tip the scales in the home team's favour.

The Warriors opening pair of Makhaya Ntini (0-38) and Birch (2-57) contained the Cobras well upfont, but once the change bowlers came on, the defending champions were able to accelerate the run rate.

Walters went wicketless, conceding 38 runs in the process, while Wayne Parnell had been slaughtered to all corners of Newlands, conceding 59 runs in eight overs. Smuts collected two wickets but at a cost of 61 runs in ten overs.

The Cobras moved into second position on the log, depending on results elsewhere, and are now just four points behind the Bizhub Highveld Lions, with two matches to play. The Cobras next face the Chevrolet Knights in Bloemfontein on Sunday.

The Warriors turn their attention to the Lions, whom they face in Johannesburg on Sunday. The Lions will be looking to gain full points against the Eastern Cape Franchise who are struggling for form and have only one victory from eight matches this season, to keep the Cobras at bay.
