Warriors have advantage against Knights

Rilee Rossouw’s hundred and Dillon du Preez’s 88 helped the Chevrolet Knights post a first innings total of 268 in their Sunfoil Series match against the Chevrolet Warriors at Chevrolet Park in Bloemfontein on Thursday. The away side are 79 for two at the close of day one, trailing by 189 runs.

The Knights lost their two openers early on. In the sixth over Gurshwin Rabie trapped Rudi Second in front for five and in the next over, Andrew Birch enticed Michael Erlank (0) into a drive and found the outside edge, McLaren making no mistake behind the stumps.

Coming off a century for the national side, Dean Elgar managed only four runs before he was brilliantly caught by Ashwell Prince from a Rabie delivery. The Knights were in all sorts of trouble at 21 for three.

Rossouw looked in fine form as he scored freely all around the ground, and along with Ryan Bailey, attempted to rebuild the innings. After the two had put on 43 runs together, Rabie found Bailey’s outside edge and the 30-year-old was out for nine.

Obus Pienaar strode to the crease and was walking back to the pavilion in no time without any runs to his name. Four deliveries is all it took for him to became Rabie’s fourth victim.

Rossouw was the shining light for the Knights, passing his half century in just 49 deliveries. He was joined at the crease by Patrick Botha, who looked aggressive from his first delivery, but, on the stroke of lunch, he was caught by Christiaan Jonker off the bowling of Simon Harmer for 22 from 20 deliveries.

The post-lunch session started well for the Knights, with Romano Terblanche hitting four boundaries, but he went to the well once too often and was caught by Davy Jacobs for 17 from a Harmer delivery.

Du Preez came in and was the man who could finally support Rossouw and build a partnership. The pair brought up their 50 partnership in 62 deliveries. The next milestone to be brought up was Rossouw’s century, which he reached in only 107 deliveries, including 13 fours and a six.

With Rossouw reaching his hundred, he then lost his concentration, as the next delivery he faced saw the end of him. Ayabulela Gqamane claimed the prized wicket of the in-form batsman, having him caught by Arno Jacobs for 100.

Du Preez played a fantastic knock with the lower order and passed his half century in 57 deliveries. The fast bowler is clearly in some great nick, after scoring 118 in his last outing against the Titans.

Post tea, Malusi Siboto and Du Preez brought up their 50 partnership, with the former contributing only eight runs, but holding up an end perfectly. The 64-run stand was finally broken by Harmer after the stubborn Siboto was caught by Vuyisa Makhaphela for nine from 63 deliveries.

Corne Dry scored just five before Gqamane claimed his second scalp. Du Preez remained unbeaten on 88 as the Knights were all bowled out for 268.

Rabie was the pick of the bowlers with figures are four for 63 in 19 overs and Harmer ended with three for 67 in 21 overs.

Following his form with the bat, Du Preez was given the new ball and his second delivery trapped Michael Price dead in front, sending the opening batsman back to the pavilion for a duck.

Arno Jacobs joined Davy Jacobs at the crease and the pair kept the run-rate above four to the over. With the partnership on 36, the latter edged a Terblanche delivery to Rudi Second and was out for 18.

Veteran left-hander, Prince (24), along with Arno Jacobs (33), took the Warriors past 50 and to the close of play without any trouble.

Terblanche finished the day with figures of one for eight from three overs.
