Champions Titans demolish Dolphins

A brilliant bowling and fielding display and ruthless batting by the champions, the Multiply Titans, demolished the Hollywoodbets Dolphins by seven wickets in the final of the Ram Slam T20 Challenge at SuperSport Park on Saturday evening.

Full Scorecard: Titans v Dolphins

It was the third consecutive title for the Titans, who are so strong they could afford to leave out Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel from their starting XI.

The Dolphins were bundled out for a pitiful 100 before Quinton de Kock lashed the home side to the brink of an embarrassingly easy victory with 39 from just 27 deliveries, with four fours and two sixes. The Titans reached 101-3 with an eye-watering 8.5 overs to spare.

AB de Villiers smashed an exhilarating 27 from 13 balls with three sixes before holing out to deep midwicket, but Aiden Markram made sure the humiliation was complete with an unbeaten 18 from 14 balls.

But it was the bowlers who won the game. Lungi Ngidi was outstanding with the new ball, claiming 2-15 in his four overs, but Chris Morris was even more devastating, claiming a pair of wickets in two spells at either end of the innings to finish with a remarkable 4-13 in 3.3 overs.

Malusi Siboto returned figures of 2-10 from three overs while Junior Dala had 1-21 from three as the home side’s attack completely dominated their outclassed visitors.

Dolphins openers Vaughn van Jaarsveld (14) and Morne van Wyk (6) took 11 runs off the opening over from Titans skipper Albie Morkel – who then removed himself from the attack and did not reappear – but that was their highlight of the innings.

Dane Vilas (21) briefly threatened to rebuild before Siboto bowled him with a slower ball and Andile Phehlukwayo added another 21 from 18 balls before Morris had him caught at mid-off in the 19th over.

It was a ruthless display from the Titans – so ruthless that questions will persist about an enforced ‘balancing’ system to ensure a degree of parity between South Africa’s six franchise squads.

It is entirely feasible that the Titans could have won the tournament with their 2nd XI. Nonetheless, none of the gloss from their triumph should be tarnished. They are the most professional franchise in the country and the best administered.
