SA women’s emerging edge England

Tumi Sekhukhune starred with the ball and Lara Goodall with the bat as the South Africa emerging team edged out the England women’s academy in their second match of the Cricket South Africa Emerging Women's Triangular Series in Pretoria on Monday.

There was also a stellar all-round performance from Nadine de Klerk as the hosts bounced back from a heavy loss to the Australia under-19s with a three-wicket win at the at the Groenkloof Oval.

Sekhukhune first claimed 3/22 in 7.1 overs to help dismiss the tourists for 152, with De Klerk chipping in with 1/19 in a miserly nine overs that also included two maidens.

Odine Kirsten was also virtually unplayable and she showed this with a remarkable 1/9. Anneke Bosch was the only other bowler with more than one scalp after bagging 2/26 – bowling the visitors out in 49.1 overs.

Opener Goodall then struck 40 off 82 balls to hold a wobbly top-order together as South Africa made heavy weather of the chase.

Faye Tunnicliffe (28) and Nonkululeko Thabethe (24) finally provided her with support as the home side reached 79/2, before more quick wickets left them in trouble at 87/5. De Klerk then struck 26 off 45 deliveries to help get them over the line with 10 balls to spare.

Their first win of the series put them second on the table behind the Australians, who have won both of their matches so far, with winless England third.

The next game for the South Africans is against the log leaders on Friday.
