Boxing SA announce 2017 award nominees

At a meeting held in East London on Wednesday, which was attended by the Minister of Sport Thulus Nxesi, Boxing SA announced the nominees for the men’s and women’s Boxer of the Year for 2017.

The awards will be held at the Boardwalk Hotel in Port Elizabeth on 2 February.

MEN'S BOXER OF THE YEAR

The nominees are Zolani Tete (WBO bantamweight champion), Azinga Fuzile (South African featherweight champion), Kevin Lerena (IBO cruiserweight champion) and Thulane Mbenge (South African welterweight champion).

Tete must be the favourite to take the award after beating Arthus Villaneuva for the WBO interim belt, and then being elevated to full champion and making a defence against fellow South African Siboniso Gonya when he stopped him at eleven seconds into the first round.

WOMEN'S BOXER OF THE YEAR

Noni Tenge, Bukiwe Nonina and Mapule Ngubene are the nominees in this section.

There are a number of other awards like 'Fight of the Year' and 'Prospect of the Year', which will be announced at a later stage.
