Saunders wins one-sided fight

Billy Joe Saunders from England completely outboxed Canada’s David Lemieux to retain his WBO middleweight belt in a one-sided fight at the Place Bell in Laval, Canada on Saturday night.

The scores were 120-108, 118-110 and 117-111.

The hometown favourite never got into the fight as the skilful Saunders kept him on the end of his right jab throughout the fight.

The southpaw, Saunders, 26-0; 12, took control from the opening bell as he danced around the ring to dominate the big-punching Lemieux, 38-4; 33.

In complete control, Saunders slipped inside a big right hand from Lemieux in the third round and looked out into the crowd and contemptuously showed how far the hook missed him.

Lemieux spent most of the rounds chasing the slick champion and was unable to close him down and score with his big right hand.

The crowd began booing Saunders but it did not bother him as he was in control.

After the fight Saunders called out Gennady Golovkin who holds the IBF, WBA and WBC belts.

However, the question is can he keep the powerful Golovkin on the outside even with his skilful boxing?

Such a fight is a long way off as Golovkin has a return match with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez next year after they fought to a disputed draw on September 16.
