Usyk makes third defence of belt

Oleksandr Usyk of the Ukraine makes the third defence of his WBO cruiserweight belt when meets former long-time WBO cruiserweight champion Marco Huck from Serbia at the Max Schmeling Halle in Berlin, Germany on Saturday night.

The 30-year-old Usyk (12-0; 10) was an outstanding amateur and had won European, Olympic and World gold before making his pro debut on 9 November, 2013.

After winning his first nine fights inside the distance he beat the previously unbeaten Krzysztof Glowacki (26-0) by wide margins to take the WBO cruiserweight belt. The scores were 119-109 and 117-111 twice.

He then made successful defences against South Africa’s Thabiso Mchunu (ko 9) and Michael Hunter (pts 12).

Huck, 32, made his pro debut in November 2004 and has a record of 40-4-1; 27.

After a six-year reign as WBO cruiserweight champion he lost the belt to Glowacki on an eleventh-round knockout in August 2015.

Huck was in control and ahead on points when Glowacki came back to score a knockout at 2 minutes 39 seconds into the eleventh round.

Since losing the WBO belt he has had three fights, winning against Ola Aflobi and Dmytro Kucher for the IBO cruiserweight belt and a points loss to Mairis Briedis for the vacant WBC cruiserweight belt in April this year.

Usyk has fast hands and knockout power, and could stop Huck inside the distance, but the odds are that the vastly experienced challenger could see out the distance to lose on points.

The other major organisation champions are WBC Emeritus, Tony Bellew (GB), WBC, Mairus Briedis (Latvia), WBA, Denis Lebedev (Russia) and IBF, Murat Gassiev (Russia).
