Thurman unifies titles
WBA welterweight champion Keith Thurman beat WBC champion Danny Garcia on a split decision in a unification match-up at the Barclays Centre in Brooklyn, New York, on Saturday night.
The scores were 116-112, 115-113 for Thurman and 115-113 for Garcia.
Thurman made a fast start as he scored with some big shots on Garcia’s chin in the first round and stunned him just before the bell.
Both fighters continued to throw bombs in the second round as both landed with power shots, with Thurman possibly winning the first three rounds.
Garcia managed to get more success as the bout wore on, hooking to the body and head.
However, in the later rounds it became a tactical battle with both fighters missing badly at times.
Thurman, who is the better boxer, used his classy jab and quicker hands to beat the advancing Garcia through most of the rounds before he backed off in the last two rounds, dancing around the ring confident that he would take the decision.
