Wilder's KO record now 27/27

Heavyweight Deontay Wilder recorded his 27th consecutive knockout victory when he beat Matt Greer in the second round at the weekend.

The undefeated Wilder knocked Greer down three times before the bout in Tabasco, Mexico, was stopped. He now boasts a record of 27-0; 27. Greer dropped to 15-9; 13.

In the main event, super-eatherweight Sergio Thompson improved to 26-2; 23 when he stopped Moises Castro (29-20-4; 13) in the fifth round.

Robinson Castellanos (17-9; 11) won his featherweight bout against Robinson Castellanos on a first-round knockout. Castellanos dropped to 17-9; 11.

There were shortcut wins all around at the weekend. In Uncasville, Connecticut, Sergey Kovalev knocked down former WBA light-heavyweight champion Gabriel Campillo three times on his way to a third-round stoppage win.

Kovalev improved to 20-0-1; 17 and Campillo dropped to 21-5-1; 7.

On the same card, middleweight Curtis Stevens (23-3; 17) stopped Elvin Ayala (26-6-1; 12) in 70 seconds.

Spectators in Guadalajara, Mexico, also saw a couple of short bouts. Super-bantamweight Mario Munoz (13-0-1; 10) knocked out Cecilo Santos (27-23-6; 17) in the fifth round and super-featherweight Miguel Roman (39-11; 29) stopped Alejandro Barrera (20-2; 16) in the second round.

But in Fort Worth, Texas, bantamweight Ray Ximenez had to go all the way in a six-rounder to beat Shawn Nicol.

Ximenez improved to 10-0; 3 and Nichol dropped to 7-13; 5 when the fight ended in a majority decision – 60-54, 58-56 and 57-57.

And in Buenos Aires, Fernando Angulo needed the benefit of a split decision to beat Juan Manuel Bonanni in a fight for the WBC’s interim Latino welterweight title. Angulo improved to 20-4-3; 7 and Bonanni now stands at 20-4-3; 7.


British welterweight champion Frankie Gavin retained his title when he stopped Jason Wellborn in the seventh round on Saturday night.

Gavin, who is undefeated after 15 fights, has now won 11 by knockout.

The fight at the Wallsall Town Hall was stopped in the seventh round when referee Ian John-Lewis intervened after 2 minutes 35 seconds.

Gavin was in control throughout and there was never any doubt about the outcome. Welborn’s record dropped to 11-2; 5.

On the same bill, Martin Gethin won the vacant British lightweight title when he stopped Ben Murphy in the ninth round.

Gethin improved to 23-3-1, with 10 knockouts, and Murphy dropped to 8-4; 5.

In Wolverhampton, Glenn Foot beat Dale Evans to win an eight-man welterweight series. Foote won £32,000 (more than R450 000) for winning the final, as well as £2 000 (over R280 000) for scoring a stoppage win earlier in the Prizefighter tournament.

Foot, whose record now stands at 10-0; 5, won the three-round final on a split decision. Evans dropped to 6-1-1; 3.
