Clijsters makes doubles exit

Belgian Kim Clijsters, who made an emotional retirement from singles at the US Open after a second-round loss, saw her women's doubles bid alongside Kirsten Flipkens end on Thursday.

China's Zhang Shuai and Taiwan's Chuang Chia-Jung defeated Clijsters and Flipkens 6-3, 6-4 in the opening round.

British teen Laura Robson ousted Clijsters 7-6 (7/4), 7-6 (7/5) on Wednesday to end the singles career of the Belgian, who had won three US Open singles crowns and last year's Australian Open title.

Clijsters, 29, said earlier this year that the US Open would be her final bow. But she still has at least one more match, that in mixed doubles alongside American Bob Bryan. They open against Americans Steve Johnson and Irina Falconi.
