SA lose Davis Cup doubles

Blaz Kavcic and Blaz Rola handed Slovenia the all important third point to secure victory against South Africa, after breezing past Raven Klaasen and Nikala Scholtz in Saturday's doubles.

Kavcic and Rola beat Klaasen and Scholtz 7-5 6-1 7-6 (4) to gain an unassailable lead which keeps them in the Euro/Africa Group 1 while SA now has the daunting task of playing Russia away in a promotion relegation Tie.

"It was a tough match" said Klaasen.

"We were up a break early in the opening set but when they broke back they played a good stretch until the end of the second set.

"Then Nikala and I turned things around the third set."

The winner of the SA vs Russia clash from October 18-20 will remain in Group 1 while the loser will be relegated to Group 2.

Slovenia came into Saturday's doubles two points clear of SA after Rola and Kavcic both won their singles rubbers on Friday in straight sets against Rik De Voest and Ruan Roelofse respectively.

Both SA and Slovenia made changes to their doubles team an hour before play on Saturday.

Scholtz replaced the injured Roelofse (Hamstring) for team SA while Kavcic and Rola surprisingly replaced their names doubles combination of Janez Semrajc and Grega Zemlja.

Scholtz said a few close points could have changed the match and given him and Klaasen a chance to get the doubles point.

"It was close, closer than the score suggests," Scholtz said.

"We were so close on some points and that could have swung the momentum our way but credit to the Slovenians for maintaining the pressure and composure.

"I'm real "bummed" we lost but know deep down we gave of our best."
