Anderson books third-round spot
Kevin Anderson advanced to the third round of the Australian Open on Wednesday, defeating Andrey Kuznetsov in straight sets 6-1, 7-5, 6-4 in a match that lasted under two hours.
The tall South African, who has been in excellent form recently, having reached the final of the Sydney International, sent down 19 aces in a dominant serving display against the 21-year-old Russian, ranked 79 in the world.
Kuznetsov, who won the junior Wimbledon title in 2009, was broken four times by the South African.
Anderson is looking to progress to the fourth stage of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time, and will next face 22nd seed Fernando Verdasco of Spain, who he recently beat during the Hopman Cup in Perth.
Verdasco easily defeated Belgian Xavier Malisse 6-1, 6-3, 6-2.
