Tsonga withdraws from Montreal Masters

Next week's Montreal Masters has lost Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to a knee injury which has kept the world No 8 inactive since Wimbledon, the tournament announced on Wednesday.

"I am sorry that I won't be able to play in Montreal, a tournament and a city with friendly fans that I really appreciate," two-time semifinalist Tsonga said in a statement.

"I need to continue to rehab my knee that I injured at Wimbledon. I hope to be ready for the US Open at the end of August. I will see you soon."

Tsonga has not played more than a month since joining what turned into an injury exodus at the All England Club. He withdrew hurt in the second round during a match with Ernests Gulbis.

The tournament could find itself also missing Roger Federer, depending on the Swiss player's decision regarding the back injury he has dealt with in recent weeks.

But there is apparent good news for ATP number 10 Stanislas Wawrinka, who had to quit a match last week in Gstaad with back injuries. The Swiss is reportedly signed up for promotional duties in Montreal which would assume his presence on court.
