Djokovic, Murray coast in Toronto starts
Holder Novak Djokovic and two-time champion Andy Murray both shook off any London Olympic hangovers to coast in opening matches at the Toronto Masters on Wednesday.
Djokovic, the top seed, needed just 71 minutes to get past Australian teenager Bernard Tomic 6-2, 6-3 to reach the third round after a bye.
Murray, the Games gold medallist, dug into his reserves just 72 hours after winning London to post a 6-1, 6-3 defeat of Italian Flavio Cipolla.
"I was stiff and sore," said the Scot. "I had a lot of matches at the Olympics and this was my first match on hard court in four months."
Djokovic wasted no time as he set up three match points with his sixth ace and converted on the first to down Tomic.
Murray was presented with a cake on court to celebrate his Olympic success. Despite his gluten-free lifestyle, the world No 4 cut himself a huge piece and took a bite of the chocolate creation which featured a replica of his Olympic medal on the top.
Murray got through in less than 90 minutes, but was treated after the fifth game of the second set on his left knee, which still looked to be bothering him on the way into the third round after a bye given to all seeds.
"I haven't had much time since winning the gold," he said. "The last few days have been unbelievable - a bit surreal. I've been very busy but it's worth it."
There was less recovery luck for another pair of Olympic medallists, with third seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (men's doubles silver) and Juan Del Potro (men's singles bronze) both going out in straight sets.
Tsonga, a Games quarterfinals last week, was beaten by fellow Frenchman Jeremy Chardy, who inflicted a 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) loss in the second round.
"I have to play even if I am tired, and it's like this," said Tsonga. "I will not complain. I will just say, Okay, next week I have another tournament, I will have some rest, and that's it."
Argentine Del Potro is now heading for home after losing to Czech Radek Stepanek 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).
"It's not easy play after big effort in the Olympics, but I tried anyway," said the 2009 US Open winner. "Now I need time to recover my body if I want to stay healthy.
"This was my first match on hard courts since Miami (March), But now I will have time to relax, to train, and I will be 100 per cent for the next tournaments and 100 per cent for my favourite tournament in New York."
Fourth seed Tomas Berdych defeated Julien Benneteau of France 6-7 (10-12), 6-4, 6-4 while fifth seed Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia beat Mikhail Youzhny 7-6 (7-2), 6-4.
Germany's Tommy Haas, now ranked 25th after three finals and one title in the past five weeks, upset ninth seed Gilles Simon 6-2, 6-3. He next plays Stepanek,
"I don't want to look back now from the last weeks or months with the way I've been playing, I would just like to continue," said Haas, 34. "My mind is on my next match and after this will be Cincinnati and the US Open and I'll continue the rest of the year."
Two German seeds split as number 12 Philipp Kohlschreiber defeated Italy's Fabio Fognini 6-2, 6-2 while Spaniard Marcel Granollers put out number 15 Florian Mayer 6-3, 6-4.
