It might on the surface have appeared a major doubles upset in the Paris Masters tournament on Friday with no direct bearing on South Africa.

Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski from Poland claimed the eighth and final doubles berth at the ATP World Tour Finals when they defeated four-time ATP World Tour Doubles Champions Bob and Mike Bryan 6-4, 7-6 (7) in the quarterfinals of the Paris Masters on Friday.

The Polish duo’s victory in Paris win eliminated the other team in contention South African Davis Cup player Wesley Moodie and Belgium's Dick Norman from the ATP World Tour championship finale in London.

Fyrstenberg and Matkowski qualified for their third year-end championship in the past four years.

The Polish duo in 2009 also collected two ATP World Tour titles for the third straight year, winning their first grass court title at Eastbourne (d. Parrott-Polasek) in mid-June and their first Asian title in Kuala Lumpur (d. Kunitsyn-Levinsky).

The ATP World Tour Finals, the world’s biggest-ever indoor tennis event, will feature the world’s top eight singles players and eight doubles teams competing to be officially crowned 2009 ATP World Tour Champions.

Each of the top eight players and doubles teams will be drawn to play a minimum of three round-robin matches to determine which four players and teams advance to the knockout semifinals.
