Ukraine qualifier Sergiy Stakhovsky beat Russian wildcard Andrey Kuznetsov 6-1, 6-4 on Thursday in the second round of the St Petersburg Open in Russia.

Stakhovsky broke Kuznetsov, the Wimbledon junior champion, three times to reach the quarterfinals of a tournament for the second straight week. He lost to eventual champion Mikhail Youzhny of Russia in the final eight of the Kremlin Cup last week.

Igor Kunitsyn ousted wildcard Michail Elgin 6-2, 6-3 in an all-Russian match.

Stakhovsky will play German veteran Bjorn Phau, while Kunitsyn will face second-seeded Victor Hansecu of Romania.

Later on Thursday, top-seeded Youzhny was scheduled to play Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan, while fourth-seeded Igor Andreev was to take on Marat Safin in an all-Russian match.
