Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Spain's Fernando Verdasco staged a brief show of mini tennis at 430 kilometres an hour on Tuesday aboard one of the fastest trains in the world in Shanghai.
The two top ten players, there for the Shanghai Masters, managed
just a few points for the cameras inside a specially stripped-out
car on the city's maglev (magnetic levitation) train, which covers
a 30km route in just eight minutes.
That was barely time for the pair to lace up their shoes.
"This certainly goes faster than my serve," joked Tsonga, like
Verdasco bidding for one of the remaining spots in next month's
eight-man season-ending ATP World Tour Finals in London.
"It was a great sensation, something I've never felt on a train
said the Frenchman, the fifth seed this week in Shanghai.
"It was a funny sensation to be inside a train going so fast,"
said Verdasco. "I've been at 380 kph but this is the fastest."
"It's certainly faster than I've ever driven a car -- but I
don't want to say how fast that might have been. I'm not a huge fan
of speed, even roller-coasters can sometimes scare me."
