Bulls secure Serfontein's future

The Blue Bulls Company have secured the services of possibly the hottest property in SA Rugby at the moment after signing IRB Junior Rugby player for 2012 Jan Serfontein “for the foreseeable future”.

Serfontein has had an exceptional rise since his school days at Grey College in Bloemfontein. He was the standout player at the IRB Junior World Championship last year, playing an integral part in the Baby Boks’ victory in the tournament.

Since then Serfontein has made his Absa Currie Cup debut and is set to make his Vodacom Super Rugby debut this year, with comparisons to Bok great Danie Gerber not untoward.

With his contract ending at the end of 2013, the Bulls pounced early and decided to secure his future with several other provinces set to bid for his services.

The 19-year-old midfielder has taken to senior rugby with ease and according to the BBC’s High Performance Manager Xander Janse van Rensburg they are delighted to secure the extension.

“We have built a very good relationship with Jan since he was a schoolboy and I am happy to see him continuing his career in Pretoria. We obviously rate his ability as a player very high, but we are also delighted to secure someone who is a wonderful team player and human being.”

Serfontein, who hails from Port Elizabeth, said it was an easy decision.

“Home is where the heart is and I am very happy in Pretoria. The Bulls rugby family is indeed a special one and their work ethic commendable, something I want to be part of for the next couple of years.”

The secrecy about the number of years Serfontein has signed for is indicative of the interest in the youngster, and with his future now secured he can at least concentrate on his rugby for the moment.
