Jones out for two matches for tip tackle

Melbourne Rebels forward Luke Jones has been suspended for two Super Rugby matches for a dangerous lifting tackle on Vodacom Bulls winger Bjorn Basson.

Jones was shown a yellow card for the goal-line defensive tackle made during Friday's 41-35 Rebels loss to the Bulls in Melbourne.

Sanzar judicial officer Mike Heron imposed the ban on Sunday, saying he'd taken into account Jones's clean record, guilty plea and his immediate concern for the uninjured Basson in reducing what would have been a four-match ban.

However, Herron said that "tip" tackles remained a cause for concern in Super Rugby and suggested harsher penalties could be introduced for them.

It was the sixth citing for tip tackles this year in Super Rugby matches.
