Meyer could lure Matfield back

The appointment of Heyneke Meyer as Springbok coach might convince a number of Springbok legends to return to the country to play for their nation again.
Springbok rugby lost a number of stalwarts after the Rugby World Cup, either to retirement or offers overseas, but if Meyer’s appointment as the new Bok coach is confirmed it may lure a number of them back to play for the national team.
Former Bok captain Victor Matfield opened the discussions by admitting he may rethink his retirement if Meyer becomes coach.
“Everyone knows what I think about Heyneke but we must wait until Friday before we talk about it,” Matfield said with a smile.
While Matfield, who captained the Bulls to three Vodacom Super Rugby titles, has already made plans post playing career, he couldn’t help but give a trademark smile when asked if he would reconsider his retirement.
“Let’s wait and see what happens, we will see, we will talk. Everything has consequences. Playing I don’t know but we will see. It depends if he wants me. I really don’t know, it is difficult to say....”
However, it is unlikely that Matfield will play again and add to his 110 caps – just two short of John Smit’s Springbok record, especially as he has signed a contract to be an analyst on SuperSport, where he is likely to make regular appearances on the field at games and in the Boots n All studio.
He has also been contracted as the Bulls' lineout specialist, a role he might find himself fulfilling at Springbok level if Meyer comes knocking.
Another star who might return to play for the Boks is Fourie du Preez, who has moved to Japan, but has a clause in his contract releasing him to play for the national team if needed.
At the World Cup Du Preez scoffed when asked if it was his swansong, indicating he may well return to play for the Boks again if needed.
With the new Bok coach his mentor, it wouldn’t be too far-fetched to see such a scenario unfolding.
