Castle Rugby Championship 2012
A look back at the inaugural Castle Rugby Championship which replaced the Tri-Nations. The competition featured South Africa, New Zealand, Australia and newcomers Argentina.

There was never going to be any doubt that the inaugural Castle Rugby Championship was to pose the biggest challenge for new Bok coach Heyneke Meyer.

The addition of Argentina added particular spice to the tournament, with Los Pumas showing they deserve to be in the competitions with a number of top class performances away from home.

Australia and South Africa both suffered from the long Super Rugby seasons and were crippled by injuries, but the Boks struggled to find their voice as a team under a new coach.

The Boks would be kicking themselves for missing out in Perth and Dunedin, especially in Dunedin, the lack of goalkicking ability was costly.

A win at Loftus against a depleted Aussie side may have caused a sigh of relief, but it hardly dampened public opinion about player selections and the way the Boks were playing.

There was enough promise though to accept that while they were not as impressive as they could have been, the building process has begun in earnest.

Argentina were unlucky not to grab victory in New Zealand and Australia and in all likelihood should have won against a poor Bok side in Mendoza.

The All Black side was unstoppable, even though they were made to look ordinary by the Springboks in Dunedin. Their win at FNB Stadium over the Boks was the cherry on top.

If this was a report card, the All Blacks would have achieved another distinction, the Argentineans a C, with the Boks and Aussies Ds.
