Griffons beat Boland

The Down Touch Griffons are of to a winning start in the qualifying round for Currie Cup contention after beating the Boland 27-25 in the North West stadium in Welkom on Saturday afternoon.

Griffons fly half Franna du Toit contributed 17 points to his team's total, kicking five penalties and a conversion to help the hosts to a much needed victory. Boland fly half Eric Zana also had an impressive game, contributing 20 points via two tries, two penalties and two conversions.

Zana opened the scoring as early as the second minute, kicking a penalty after the Griffons infringed early on. It wasn't long however, before Du Toit countered with a good effort of his own. Zana had the pick of the first half however, scoring in the 12th minute and converting to give his side a seven point lead.

Du Toit kicked another penalty after missing an earlier attempt, but Zana was on the spot to counter with a three pointer of his own. The Griffons ended the first half in the lead however after winger Norman Nelson scored in the 30th minute. Du Toit missed the conversion, but kicked a penalty shortly thereafter to make the halftime score 14-13 in favour of the hosts.

The first ten minutes in the second half were pretty uneventful, but a yellow card to Boland centre Richard Lawson left the visitors one man short and the Griffons were awarded a Penalty Try after Boland could only stop the hosts momentum illegally. Du Toit was at hand to kick the conversion and stretch the Griffons lead to eight points.

The other Boland centre, Albert Trytsman, was also sin binned, leaving the visitors with only 13 men. That did not curb Boland's enthusiasm and Zana scored his second try of the afternoon, missing the conversion. Replacement hooker Ulrich Pretorius scored what seemed to be the winning try for Boland in the 77th minute and Zana converted for what looked like the victory, but Du Toit kicked a penalty at the death to snatch the win away from the Wellington based side.
