Griquas off to flying start

GWK Griquas have started the qualifying round of games for Currie Cup contention with a comprehensive victory of 52-5 over the Border Bulldogs in Kimberley on Friday.

The Peacock Blues are regarded as the favourite of all the participating sides to take the remaining spot in the Premier Division of this year's Currie Cup and proved their intent with a dominating victory over the Port Elizabeth based side.

Griquas started at a high pace, scoring as early as the second minute when hooker Martin Bezuidenhout burst over from a Griquas lineout. Fullback Gouws Prinsloo converted to put the men from Kimberley ahead by seven points.

It wasn't long before the hosts got into the points again, this time scoring via centre Jonathan Francke, with Prinsloo again converting to stretch the lead to 14 points.

At the end of the first quarter Griquas scored their third try of the afternoon with eighth man Burger Schoeman jotting down for a converted try.

Border tried to attack with what little possession they got, but good defence – that was a trademark of Griquas success in the Vodacom Cup competition – kept the visitors from East London at bay.

Shortly before half time Griquas scored their fourth of the afternoon, flanker Marnus Schoeman rounding off the rolling maul that has become such an effective weapon for the Peacock Blues this season.

Prinsloo again was on song with the conversion to help make the half time score 28-0 in favour of the hosts.

Boland started much better in the second half, but good defence from Griquas again botched any momentum. Griquas went into defensive mode and started defending their lead, rather than attack to increase it.

They finally got the scoreboard rolling again thanks to Bezuidenhout scoring his second try of the afternoon after a cross kick by flyhalf Francois Brummer.

Flanker Marnus Schoeman scored his second of the afternoon, with Prinsloo converting to stretch the lead even further.

Thereafter flanker Jaco Nepgen also scored before Border fullback Coyi Banda, who really impressed for the visitors, scored Border's only try of the game.

GWK Griquas 52 (28): Tries: Martin Bezuidenhout (2), Jonathan Francke, Burger Schoeman, Marnus Schoeman (2), Jaco Nepgen, Carel Greeff. Conversions: Gouws Prinsloo (6).

Border Bulldogs 5 (0): Try: Coyi Banda
