Currie Cup 2012: Year in Pictures

The 2012 Absa Currie Cup started off on the back foot due to it competing with an international season which had over lapped with the local rugby competition.

Despite the low attendances at matches, there were still lots of drama on the rugby field as minors Griquas bolted off the starting blocks and along with the Sharks were the front runners of the competition at the halfway mark.

With the threat of relegation staring the Bulls in the face, the men from Pretoria pulled up their socks and just avoided the dreaded play-off match against First Division winners, the Kings.

The Cheetahs survived the relegation, while DHL Western Province who were strengthened by their returning Springboks moved into top gear and caused a huge upset when their knocked out the defending champions the Lions at the semifinal stage.

The men from the Cape traveled to Durban to take on the in-form Sharks but it seemed the rugby gods were not going to deprive Western Province of another trophy, as it had been eleven long years since they had won something meaningful. Individual brilliance by centre Juan de Jongh saw Western Province being crowned the 2012 Absa Currie Champions.
