Ackermann, Jantjies win Absa awards

Golden Lions' rugby coach Johan Ackermann and star flyhalf Elton Jantjies were named on Wednesday as the Absa Currie Cup Coach of the Month and Absa Currie Cup Player of Month for September.

Under Ackermann's guidance, the Lions have risen to the top of the standings as he tries to defend their 2011 Currie Cup title.

Ackermann beat off the challenge of Griquas boss Pote Human, who steered his side to three consecutive wins, pushing them into semifinal contention after a slow start to their campaign.

Jantjies was instrumental in the Lions' success during September, with solid kicking and leadership of his team's attacking play.

The newly capped Springbok was named Man of the Match against the Free State Cheetahs, and is one of the tournament's leading scorers with 77 points.

Jantjies was honoured ahead of youngsters Marcel Brache (Western Province), hooker Scarra Ntubeni (Western Province), Sarel Pretorius (Cheetahs) and Willie Le Roux (Cheetahs).

The announcements were made at two handovers. Ackermann received his award at the Johannesburg Stadium, and Jantjies received his at the Springbok team hotel. They each received R10 000.
