Olivier kicks Boland to victory

Flyhalf Len Olivier scored 15 points as the Boland Cavaliers beat the Eastern Province Kings 30-23 (half-time 20-11) in their Absa Currie Cup First Division rugby match at NMB Stadium in Port Elizabeth on Friday.

Olivier hadly put a foot wrong throughout the game as he nailed three penalties and three conversions. Both teams scored three tries but it was Olivier's boot that proved the deciding factor on the night.

The win saw Boland move into the second spot on the first division log while the Kings have much work to do if they are to improve after three consecutive home defeats. The Kings have ambitions of playing Premier Division rugby next season but that looks a long way off if Friday night's result is anything to go by.

Boland were dominant from the kickoff and opened the scoring as early as the fifth minute when No 8 Zandre Jordaan crashed over after the ball had put through a number of phases. Olivier kicked the conversion.

The Kings hit back four minutes later when they resisted taking an easy shot goal from a penalty. Instead they kicked for touch and from the resultant lineout flank Mpho Mbiyozo scored the homeside's first try. The Kings took the lead through 15 minutes when flyhalf Wesley Dunlop slotted a penalty.

But their slim one-point advantage was short-lived as Cavaliers lock Philippus van Zyl scored in the corner after taking a final pass. Olivier made no mistake adding the two points and after 25 minutes kicked three more to make the score 17-8.

The Kings were not helped by the fact that they lost Dunlop, but replacement kicker Scott van Breda did manage to narrow the gap to 17-11 before Olivier succeeded with another penalty shortly before half time.

Boland wasted no time in regaining the ascendancy after the break and on the stroke of 44 minutes nippy fullback Jacquin Jansen created the overlap by joining his backline, dummied and went over to score pretty-much untouched.

Olivier was on target again with the conversion and also kicked a penalty a few minutes later to extend the visitors' lead to 30-11.

The Kings did stage a late comeback with two tries by centre Wayne Stevens and fullback Shakes Soyizwapi. However, the damage had already been done and Boland will be well-satisfied earning four valuable points away from home.
