Dashing Cavaliers muzzle Leopards

The Boland Cavaliers got their Vodacom Cup campaign back on track with an impressive 43-14 (halftime 14-7) away victory over the Leopards at Olën Park in Potchefstroom on Friday night.

The visitors bounced back from a disappointing defeat at home last week to the Pumas by scoring six tries to two against a team who look anything but Currie Cup Premier Division material.

Boland fullback Willie le Roux once again enjoyed a great night out, scoring 16 points by way of a try, four conversions and a penalty.

It was the Leopards’ fourth loss in six matches while for the Cavaliers, who have already tasted defeat on four occasions this season, a second victory will help rebuild the confidence that was so in evidence a month ago when they beat the Blue Bulls at Loftus Versfeld.

Whether it will be enough to break into the top four, and therefore quarterfinal contention, in a tough South pool featuring the seemingly unstoppable Pampas XV, Western Province, Free State and the Sharks XV, remains to be seen, but on the evidence of this performance there can be no doubt that the Bolanders, on their day, can prove unstoppable themselves.

Hooker Clemen Lewis got the ball rolling as early as the fifth minute with a try converted by flyhalf Elgar Watts, but even the scoreboard operators would have been surprised at how little work they would have to do over the next half an hour as both teams were undone by sloppy play.

Leopards centre Joubert Engelbrecht drew his side level with a try in the 35th minute, converted by new flyhalf Johnny Welthagen, but a try on the stroke of halftime by left wing Brendon April gave the Bolanders a crucial psychological advantage.

They continued in the same vein after the break, with Le Roux slotting a penalty, April scoring his second try, wing partner Allister Kettledas getting in on the action and Le Roux himself darting over before converting all three touchdowns for a healthy 38-7 lead on the hour.

Scrumhalf Whestley Moolman got the Leopards’ second and final try with 15 minutes left on the clock but the Bolanders, and quite deservedly so, had the final say when Kettledas grabbed his brace to add a final, but totally superfluous, nail to the Leopards’ coffin.

Scorers:

Leopards 14 – Tries: Whestley Moolman, Joubert Engelbrecht. Conversions: Johnny Welthagen, SW Oosthuizen.

Cavaliers 43 – Tries: Willie le Roux, Clemen Lewis, Brendon April (2), Allister Kettledas (2). Conversions: Le Roux (4), Elgar Watts. Penalty: Le Roux.
