‘Money’ and ‘Dr Iron Fist’ on show

Two of the best fighters in international boxing will be showcased on SuperSport this weekend.

On Saturday, Wladimir Klitschko, the holder of multiple heavyweight titles, will defend his belts against Francesco Pianeta.

A few hours later, Floyd Mayweather jnr, the pound-for-pound king, defends his WBC welterweight title against Robert Guerrero in Las Vegas.

The champions couldn’t be more different if they tried. Klitschko is studious, methodical and gentlemanly. Mayweather is cocky, arrogant and super-slick, the best fighter of his generation.

Klitschko hasn’t lost in nine years and looks unlikely to do so against Pianeta, a big lump who has resided on the fringes of the division in recent years. The Italian gets his big chance based on a decent record and being reasonably well-known in Germany, where he is based.

Mayweather ought to have a more difficult contest. Despite being unbeaten and having held six championships in four weight classes, he is already 36 and hasn’t fought in exactly a year. He also had a recent stint in jail, although he claims to have renewed his hunger after signing a six-fight deal with a US broadcaster that could push his gross earnings to half a billion dollars.

We know what Mayweather brings to the table: flashy hands, reasonable power, good angles and a champion’s temperament.

Guerrero is an accomplished southpaw with just a single defeat in 12 years. He has also beaten a host of top fighters, among them SA’s Malcolm Klassen, Andre Berto and Joel Casamayor.

He figures to give Mayweather problems, but whether he has the all-round game to upset “Money” is a long shot. Many have tried. All have failed.

BROADCAST DETAILS (all times are CAT, SA, GMT+2)
