Title fights galore this weekend

The WBO super-bantamweight championship fight between Nonito Donaire and Jorge Arce is the highlight of a big boxing weekend on SuperSport with no fewer than three title bouts on offer.

Donaire, who recently beat South Africa’s Jeffrey Mathebula, is ranked among the top six pound-for-pound boxers and hasn’t lost in 11 years.

He’s seen off a slew of challengers, although in five-time champion Arce he meets a veteran with more than twice as many fights. The Mexican is never in a dull fight and will give Donaire all the trouble he can handle,

SuperSport 7 will cross to the Houston tournament at 4am on Sunday. The bill includes the WBA super-bantamweight title fight between Cuban southpaw Guillermo Rigondeaux and 50-fight veteran Poonsawat Kratingdaengym.

On Saturday night (SS2, from 9pm), WBO super-middleweight champion Arthur Abraham will top the card in Germany against Mehdi Bouadla.

Closing out the weekend will be the SA featherweight fight between Sydney Maluleka and Aphiwe Mboyiya, from East London (SS4, from 6pm on Sunday).

The main undercard bout may well steal the show, featuring Simphiwe Nongqayi against Thabo Sonjica. Nongqayi is a former IBF super-flyweight champion who boasts a 2009 defeat of Arce on his resumé.
