KJ Choi’s hope of becoming the first player in history to successfully defend the Players Championship title has become all the more difficult as 17 of the top 20 golfers in the world and nine past champions have all committed to playing in the unofficial fifth major.

The Players Championship will be broadcast exclusively live on SuperSport.

Fresh off reclaiming the No 1 ranking on Sunday, Rory McIlroy is the favourite in a tournament in which he is yet to make the cut.

The morale boost that 2007 champion Phil Mickelson will have received from his induction into the World Golf Hall of Fame on Monday will likely also make him a fearsome contender.

Tim Clark, champion in 2010, is among a strong and in-form South African contingent which includes Ernie Els, a runner-up last week at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, and Louis Oosthuizen, whose recent appearances yielded victory at the Malaysian Open and a runner-up finish at the Masters.

SuperSport’s Players Championship broadcast starts on Wednesday with magazine shows SuperGolf and Inside the PGA featuring a preview of the tournament.

All four rounds will be broadcast exclusively live in HD and SD on SuperSport.
