Wheelchair Basketball was developed by American World War II veterans as part of their rehabilitation programme, and was subsequently promoted worldwide by Sir Ludwig Guttman, the founder of the Paralympic Games. It featured in the first Paralympic Games in 1960, with a women's competition added at the Tel Aviv 1968 Games. The rules are broadly the same as regular basketball - the court is the same size, the basket is the same height and each team of 12 can only have five players on the court at any one time.
There will be 12 teams competing in the men's event in London, and 10 competing in the women's event.
