TUESDAY, 7 AUGUST

10:45pm - two more results before I sign off: men's hockey saw Spain and GB draw 1-1, while in the men's football semifinals Brazil saw off Korea 3-0 to set up Saturday's final against Mexico.

Good night - same time tomorrow.

10:25pm - the other gold medal awarded tonight went to Russia's Ivan Okhov, who cleared 2.38m at his first attempt in the men's high jump in a great sequence of clearances. After one failure at 2.29m, he went over 2.33, 2.36 and 2.38 each time with his first attempt to crush the high hopes of his fellow competitors.

Erik Kynard of the US was second, with Mutaz Barshim (Bahrain), Derek Drouin (Canada) and GB's Robert Grabarz all sharing bronze.

10:20pm - gold medal in the men's 1 500m for Algeria's Taoufik Makhloufi, running away in the last 250m for an easy victory in 3:34.08. This after he was kicked out of the Games for not trying in the men's 800m heats after his team forgot to withdraw him, but later re-instated.

America's Leonel Manzano was second in 3:34.79, and Morocco's Abdalaati Iguider third.

10:07pm - great contest in the men's discus, with Germany's defending champion Robert Harting taking the lead with his fifth throw of 68.27, edging Iran's Ehsan Hadadi who had led from the first round of throws with 68.18m. Hadadi actually went past Harting with his own fifth throw, only for his foot to touch the front of the throwing circle.

The enormous German then didn't disappoint with his celebration, engaging in his traditional vest rip before a celebratory run over the women's 100m hurdles that were being set up. Not sure the organisers would have been too happy, but perhaps they'll discus it with him later. Gerd Kanter was third, with 40-year-old Virgilijus Alekna, whose last three Games were gold, gold, bronze, down in fourth.

10:05pm - Raining champion. Sally Pearson lived up to her 'favourite' tag in the women's 100m hurdles final, clinching gold in a new Olympic record of 12.35. And that in the rain too!. Three Americans followed - defending champion Dawn Harper who pushed her all the way with 12.37, followed by Kellie Wells and Lolo Jones.

9:41pm - final semi of the women's 200m, and 400m champion Sanya Richards-Ross and 100m champion Shelly-Anne Fraser-Pryce crossed the line together to secure their final berths.

That sets up a fascinating contest for Wednesday night at 10pm, with Richards-Ross, Felix, Campbell-Brown, Fraser-Pryce and Jeter all with their eyes on the prize. Don't you dare miss that one - five of the world's finest women in full flight as we prepare to celebrate Women's Day in SA.

9:34pm - second semi of the women's 200m, and Allyson Felix didn't disappoint with a commanding victory, easing up 40m before the line, such was her lead. Going through in second was Ivory Coast's Murielle Ahoure.

9:28pm - Britain's Robert Grabarz has just failed at 2.33m in the men's high jump. He almost got over, but the bar engaged in a bit of Grab-arse....

9:26pm - first semi of the women's 200m, and Veronica Campbell-Brown and Carmelita Jeter are safely through.

9:20pm - final field through for the men's 800m final, and, as listed below, Africans occupy the top five spots in fastest qualifying times. Nick Symmonds is the only name through not already mentioned. Aman was a touch quicker than Rudisha, but the smart money is on the Kenyan.

9:13pm - final semi of the men's 800m, and fifth place for SA's Andre Olivier. Ethiopia's Mohammed Aman and Kenya's Timothy Kitum are through from this heat, with the US's Duane Solomon riding their coattails into Thursday night's final as one of the fastest losers.

- second semi of the men's 800m, and Rudisha wins it easy as you like in 1:44.35. Pure class. Andrew Osagie of GB had a strong finish to take the second automatic qualifying spot. Watching the big Kenyan is like watching Carl Lewis all those years ago - just graceful, effortless power.

- first semi of the men's 800m, and two Africans take the two automatic qualifying spots. Abubaker Kaki of Sudan and Nijel Amos of Botswana crossed side by side in a quick time of 1:44.51 and .54 respectively, with Anthony Chemut of Kenya fourth and facing an anxious wait to see if he is one of the two fastest losers.

8:50pm - 40-year-old Virgin, sorry, Virgilijus Alekna, who just seems to have been around for ever, opens with a 67.38 in the men's discus. Fine wine, and all that.

8:24pm - Sally Pearson stunning in the women's 100m hurdles semi, running a 12.39, with the Olympic record 12.37. What will the Australian do in the final later tonight (10pm)?

8pm - right, as the athletes warm up for tonight's show, here's the athletics programme for the evening:

20:00 - Men's High Jump final
20:15 - Women's 100m Hurdles semifinals
20:45 - Men's Discus final
20:55 - Men's 800m semifinals (David Rudisha, Andre Olivier)
21:25 - Women's 200m semifinals
22:00 - Women's 100m Hurdles final
22:15 - Men's 1 500m final (six of the 12 finalists are African)

For all the results and day's schedule, CLICK HERE, and here are a couple of other results from today:

- men's football semifinal: Mexico 3 Japan 1
- men's hockey: Belgium 3 Japan 0

So settle in and let's marvel once again at the absolute peak of human evolution. Don't forget Rudisha at 21:04 and Allyson Felix at 21:33 - both poetry in powerful motion.

4:15pm - final score from the hockey, and it was too good to last. SA's men, after going up 2-0 early in the game, went down 6-3 in the end to Argentina. No problems with SA's attack in the last couple of games, just need to sort out those defensive issues.

If you're looking for something to watch this afternoon, some great gymnastics finals on SuperSport Bronze.

3:25pm - SA's hockey men got reined in a little by Argentina, with the teams going in to halftime at 2-2. In the men's triathlon, SA's Richard Murray recovered from 43rd after the swim to finish a respectable 17th (1:49.15). British brothers Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee finished 1st (1:46.25) and 3rd respectively, with Spain's Javier Gomez in silver.

2:55pm - SA's hockey men have gone 2-0 up in their match against Argentina after just 10 minutes! What next - snow in Joburg?!

1:40pm - confirmed results frm the men's 200m heats, and all the favourites are through, along with SA's Jobodwana who qualified with the sixth fastest time. The semifinals are tomorrow night, with the final on Thursday.

1:20pm - an update from the javelin, and Sunette Viljoen is comfortably through to Thursday's final after a throw of 65.92 in qualifying Group B, which was an automatic qualification distance. One throw was enough for her, as the tracksuit was back on for good after that..

1:02pm - In the second heat of the men's 200m, SA's Anaso Jobodwana was second behind medal contender Christophe Lemaitre of France to qualify for the semis, which are tomorrow night. Yohan Blake cruised through his heat too.

12:50pm - wouldn't call this news, exactly, but Usain Bolt cantered through in his 200m heat, jogging the last 50 or 60m for a 20.39 and first place.

12:32pm - great news from the women's kayak (K1) 500m semifinals, and SA's Bridgitte Hartley won her race to go through to Thursday's final (11:08am). Just like her rowing counterparts, she came from way back at halfway (sixth) to pull through strongly and clinch top spot in 1:51.286. All results in, and Bridgette was second fastest overall behind Danuta Kozak of Hungary (1:50.469). A potential medal for SA? Thursday, just after 11am.

12:15pm - some news from the women's kayak heats, and SA's Bridgitte Hartley was second in her 500m heat in 1:53.051 to qualify for the semifinals, which are happening right now at 12:30pm.

12pm - confirmation from the 110m hurdles heats, and SA's Lehaan Fourie goes through as the 15th fastest in a season's best of 13.49. The US's Aries Merritt (and I thought those star signs had no merit...) looked very impressive going through as the fastest qualifier, with Dayron Robles also through to tomorrow night's semis. Liu Xiang, however, suffered Olympic heartbreak for the second Games in a row.

11:50am - some news from the 110m hurdles for men, and SA's Lehann Fourie is safely through to the semis after finishing second in his heat behind Dayron Robles. Disaster for Liu Xiang of China though, as the 2004 champion crashed out on the first hurdle of his heat. After the heartbreak of Beijing as well, that is a bitter blow. Some heartless soul behind me crying out 'Liu-ser'... ok, it is quite funny.

11am - a very good morning to you all, and here's hoping we get more moments today as emotional as the Felix Sanchez ones were last night. If Chad's quivering lower lip had SA in tears, the Dominican Republic is probably reporting floods this morning...

This morning we see the start of lightning potentially striking twice as Usain Bolt returns from his 100m triumph in the men's 200m heats. David Rudisha should cruise through the 800m semifinals tonight, and the men's 1 500m is always a thriller to watch.

Elsewhere we have the SA men taking on Argentina in the hockey, the men's football semifinals and the men's triathlon, but my suggested viewing for tonight is definitely Rudisha and then Allyson Felix in the women's 200m semis, as both are such stunning runners to watch.
