Michael Phelps made more Olympic history on Thursday at the Aquatics Centre, winning gold in the men's 200m individual medley to become the first man to win the same individual swimming event at three straight Games. It was his 20th career Olympic medal and his 16th gold. American Rebecca Soni broke the women's 200m breaststroke record for the second time in two days as she won Olympic gold for the second straight Games. Tyler Clary won the gold medal in the Olympic men's swimming 200m backstroke, denying American teammate Ryan Lochte a repeat. Clary overhauled Lochte on the final lap to win in an Olympic record of 1:53.41. Track cycling king Sir Chris Hoy equalled former rower Sir Steve Redgrave's British record haul of five Olympic gold medals after winning the men's team sprint at the Velodrome. Chad le Clos, who clinched gold in the 200m butterfly on Tuesday, won the second semifinal over the shorter distance in 51.42 seconds, qualifying second fastest for Friday night's final. American Michael Phelps won the first semifinal in 50.86. Great Britain clocked their second world record of the night to successfully defend their Olympic team sprint crown in the final against France at the Velodrome.
