Bradley Wiggins took a step towards being named Britain's greatest ever Olympian after overtaking former rower Steve Redgrave's tally of six medals following his men's time trial win. American Rebecca Soni broke the women's 200m breaststroke world record with a time of 2:20.00 in the semifinals at  at the Aquatics Centre. Suzaan van Biljon broke Penny Heyns's 13-year-old South African record of 2:23.64 in the women's 200 metres breaststroke semifinal. Van Biljon finished third in her semifinal with a time of 2:23.21 to advance to the final. American Nathan Adrian touched out Australia's world champion James Magnussen by one-hundredth of a second to win the gold medal in a thrilling men's 100m freestyle final. Darren Murray of South Africa competes in heat 5 of the men's 200m backstroke.  Murray finished third in his heat  in 2:00.01, but his overall placing was not good enough to make it through to the semifinals. The South African rowing duo of Naydene Smith and Lee-Ann Persse put in a strong effort to finish second in the women's pairs B final at Eton Dorney. They crossed the line behind China's Yage Zhang and Yulan Gau. Jonathan Robinson's shot sails towards the goal to score during the men's preliminary hockey match between Great Britain and South Africa at the Riverbank Arena.
