Michael Johnson is the only athlete to win both the 200m and 400m sprints at the same Olympics, but what made his feat even greater was that he broke records in both disciplines. His 400m record still stands, while the 200m record he set in Atlanta was only beaten by Usain Bolt in 2008. He still holds the world record for the 4x400m.
Johnson retired with five gold medals to his name, three of them in individual events. His 200m time in Atlanta is considered one of his greatest achievements, because it lowered the world record by 0.34 seconds – the largest ever improvement in 200m events. He has since become a television pundit for the BBC, and will be commentating on the 2012 London Olympics.
