One of the greatest athletes of all time, Jesse Owens won gold in all four of his disciplines at the 1936 Games, and will also be remembered for embarrassing Adolf Hitler in his attempt to use the Games in Berlin to prove his theories of Aryan racial superiority.
While Owens’ medal haul in 1936 was impressive, arguably better was his achievement the previous year when he set six world records in 45 minutes one afternoon. Owens would surely have won many more Olympic medals had he not turned professional soon after the Berlin Games, when he was just 22.
