Stephen searching for Free State gold
As the 2010 season reaches its halfway mark, Audi Motorsport has taken four race wins and seven more podium finishes. Leading the championship charge is Michael Stephen (Engen Audi).
South African motorsport came to a grinding halt over the Soccer World Cup, but as the sound of the vuvuzelas fades, Audi's engines are ready to roar at Phakisa in Welkom on Saturday.
It has been a tough season for Audi but the teams have shown true character as they continue to contend Class A of the Bridgestone Production Car Championship.
With four race wins and some consistent driving, Michael Stephen finds himself third in the points standings despite the dominance of the turbocharged BMW 335is.
Whilst the last two years ended in championship glory for Johan Fourie, 2010 has been an uphill battle. Fourie has only won one race this season and although he has take a total of five podium places, he finds himself in an unaccustomed fifth place in the championship standings. A true reflection of the competitiveness of Class A that boasts eight national champions in its driver line-up.
Tschops Sipuka (Engen Audi) has put in a valiant performance in his return to production cars. Unfortunately, he has had a terrible run of bad luck. Whilst "Murphy" is no friend to Tschops, his luck is bound to turn and his true driving skills will come to the fore.
Following a double victory at Phakisa last year, Stephen, Fourie and Sipuka will be hoping to repeat history. They will tackle qualifying and three races on Saturday at Phakisa.
