Rain curtails MotoGP testing in Valencia
Valentino Rossi and the rest of the MotoGP grid had to cope with difficult conditions on the first day of 2013 season testing.
Rossi, making his return to the Factory Yamaha Factory Racing team, went out on a cold morning before the rain arrived and also completed a few laps once the inclement weather had settled in, eventually finishing the day in sixth.
His teammate Jorge Lorenzo did not head out on track in the unfavourable conditions.
Later in the day, the Factory Yamaha Team announced they would not be participating in Wednesday's second and final day, opting instead to leave Valencia this evening and take part in a one-day test at another Spanish circuit, Aragon, on Wednesday.
The hotly anticipated debut of Marc Marquez for the Repsol Honda team also didn't materialise, as both he and his teammate Dani Pedrosa decided against taking to the track.
Weather permitting, however, testing for both riders will continue at the Ricardo Tormo circuit tomorrow.
"I have this fantastic bike here but unfortunately the weather isn't very good! It's better to be patient and wait as it's important to test the bike in the best conditions possible," said Marquez.
"I spent some time with the team this morning and I learnt many things but I still have a lot to learn. I know the power will be very different and also the electronic controls, also the carbon brakes and tyres will be something I need to adapt to, but step by step we will learn.
"I'm really excited to get started but we we agree that it's best to test the bike in the dry for the first time, I just hope the weather will improve tomorrow!"
Ducati Team's Andrea Dovizioso caught the last bit of dry track in the morning to make his debut on the machine, finishing the day in third. His teammate Nicky Hayden waited until the track was completely wet before heading out, eventually finishing the day in fifth place.
Both new-boy Bradley Smith and his teammate Cal Crutchlow did not head out for Monster Yamaha Tech 3 on the day, and the duo will be hoping for improved weather tomorrow.
LCR Honda MotoGP's Stefan Bradl was set to try out the 2013 Honda, but posted the second fastest time of the day on his current bike in the morning.
GO & FUN Honda Gresini's Álvaro Bautista was first out this morning, topping the timesheets with a five-lap stint. He would not head out again.
