Stoner: I was lucky to hold on

Reigning World Champion Casey Stoner reckons he was "lucky" to claim the victory in Estoril as he was yet again bothered by arm pump.

The Honda rider held off a persistent charge from Jorge Lorenzo throughout the 28-lap Portuguese Grand Prix to beat his title rival by just over a second.

However, Stoner admits it could have been a lot different as the arm pump, a condition where the nerves get trapped and numb the hand, that has bothered him of late, again materialised.

"There was a bit of pressure throughout the race," said Stoner. "I wasn't feeling good or comfortable and I had a bit of arm pump."

He added: "I was lucky to hold on and win."

The Australian also revealed that chatter became a problem during the race, however, he believes he has found a way to ride around it on his new RC213V.

"In the end it was another fantastic weekend for us," said the 26-year-old, who now leads the standings by one point over his Yamaha rival.

"In warm-up we didn't have a big problem with chatter but then for the race, under the warmer conditions, we struggled a lot more.

"This was very difficult to ride with, in the first part of the race I was confident and attacking the track, but I closed the front twice due to the chatter.

"From this point I backed off a little, tried to stay smooth and just wanted to stay in front of Jorge and Dani, but Jorge was coming strong. I had to try and keep my pace and not make too many mistakes.

"I was changing the mapping to try and reduce the chatter problem. Towards the end of the race I began to understand how to ride around it, this made things smoother and I found some more pace and was able to bring it home for a great race win."
