Vettel still sees a chance for title
Sebastian Vettel, who had a scrappy and pointless race in Belgium last weekend, still sees himself as a 2010 Formula One title winner.
"I know how good we are - I will take the title," he said in the latest issue of Auto Bild Motorsport in Germany.
In the Spa race, Vettel missed his braking point as he approached the Bus Stop Chicane behind Jenson Button's McLaren. He tried to brake but lost control of his Red Bull, smashing into the side of the McLaren and ending Button's race (and maybe his chance of defending his title) on the spot. Button was in second place at the time.
Vettel did a similar thing earlier in the year when he ran into the side of team mate Mark Webber who was leading the Turkish Grand Prix at Istanbul. Vettel's second place was turned into a retirement and Red Bull handed a 1-2 finish to McLaren as a result of Vettel's clumsy overtaking manoeuvre.
Widely criticised for being impetuous and failing to convert poles and race positions into points-scoring results, Vettel remains defiant and optimistic.
"Someone who has the most pole positions must think that way [of taking the title]," said the young German. "These 13 races have not run completely smoothly, but I'm only 31 points behind. Assuming we maintain our speed, we can catch up quickly."
Asked whether he is a good loser, Vettel said: "Why should I be? If I could lose well, I should not be in the sport, but I'm also someone who can put things in the past and look ahead when the next morning comes."
