Management Profile - Allister Coetzee
Position: Head Coach
Date of birth: 23 May 1963, Grahamstown
Allister Coetzee joined WP Rugby in 2008 with a wealth of provincial and national level experience, including coaching at Eastern Province, the Cats, Sharks, SA under 23, the SA “A” and Springbok mid-week teams. Coetzee is most well known for his role as backline coach in Jake White’s World Cup-winning Springbok team and considers winning the 2007 tournament as the highlight of his career.
The best part of the Province job says Coetzee is the working environment, with losing being the toughest. He made his coaching debut with the SA “A” side against Border, but has been in rugby since 1974 – 22 years as a player and 13 years in a coaching capacity.
As head coach of the Vodacom WP team in the Absa Currie Cup, Coetzee believes that his captain should select himself as the best player in his position first, should have a good understanding of the game, be a selfless in terms of his leadership and have a commanding presence in his team on and off the pitch.
