Formula One driver Robert Kubica crashed out of the Sicilian Rally Taormina-Messina Rally on the weekend while in the lead of his class.

Kubica exited the rally after finishing the opening day in eighth place overall in his DP Motorsports Renault Clio R3. The Pole was five-tenths of a second ahead of local driver Paul Wise in a similar car, but on Saturday's third special stage, Kubica crashed into a wall and retired.

"I like the tests and the people have been very welcoming," said Kubica at the start of day two. "Yesterday I did not attack, I was trying to learn about driving the car - today is a longer challenge. The only unknowns are the pace notes, I hope to get used to driving in this way. I must learn to listen."

Kubica was relaxed ahead of the event, and of the physical challenge of rallying he said on the WRC website: "I'm used to it. It might be different to Formula One but we are all athletes."

On 27 November, Kubica is to compete on the Rallye de Var round of the French Championship in the same Renault Clio R3.
