Rome's mayor, Gianni Alemanno, has announced that the city is still trying to put together a plan to host a Formula One grand prix in the
city.
Race organisers were encouraged to push ahead with their plans after receiving the backing of F1 commercial rights holder Bernie
Ecclestone earlier this year.
Alemanno told reporters on Thursday that they "would like to start the preparations for 2012, hopefully putting the event on during
the summer months."
The race is slated to be a street circuit winding through the EUR district to the south of the city.
"It will be one of the three most spectacular courses, with three or four overtaking points," said Alemanno adding that the
roughly 4km long circuit would have an average speed of 175 km/h.
