FAQ: Is there a right time for children to become involved in organised activities and sport?

Is there a right time for children to become involved in organised activities and sport?

Children are naturally physically active but unfortunately as children get older (especially girls) their activity levels steadily decrease. Children develop physical (and mental) skills at different ages. The right time to encourage a child to play organised soccer (for example) or ride their bicycle without training wheels is specific to each child. Because of the huge variation in skill levels amongst similar aged children, most experts agree that the type of activity and level of involvement should be based on the interest expressed by your child in sports, their maturity and their level of skill and coordination.
Research has shown that adults are more active if they participated in organised sport as children. This is reason enough to expose and encourage your children to play sport now; so that they’ll develop into healthy, active adults.«
