Bremner calls for extended Chase to Investec Cup
If the Telkom PGA Championship had ended at the halfway mark, Merrick Bremner would have been able to narrow the gap to the leader in the Chase to the Investec Cup by nearly 120 points.
Bremner was lying third ahead of the cut at Country Club Johannesburg, while Darren Fichardt was in a share of 51st, which would have given Fichardt just over single point in the Chase to the Investec Cup, while Bremner would have earned 120.
And while Fichardt’s lead in the Chase to the Investec Cup is insurmountable, getting as many points as possible ahead of the season-ending Investec Cup tournament on March 21 is a good idea for players who want to improve their share of the R5-million Bonus Pool.
The 2012/2013 Chase to the Investec Cup season consisted of the tournaments starting with the BMG Classic and ending with the Telkom PGA Championship. The top 30 available players on the Investec Bonus Pool ranking, after the Telkom PGA Championship will qualify for the Investec Cup.
The Investec Bonus Pool will carry total prize money of R5-million with R2-million going to the winner – 30th place will pick up R40 000. And the Investec Cup will carry a prize find of R1-million with R 163 400 going to the winner.
“The Investec Cup has certainly caught our attention,” said Bremner. “It’s very lucrative and a great opportunity to make some extra money and a great idea from Investec – an unbelievable incentive.”
Like all the other Sunshine Tour professionals, Bremner is happy to see the Investec Cup continue, and hopes that some refinements to its format makes it even more exciting.
“I’d love to see it run through the whole season,” said Bremner. “That would give a lot more guys, especially the guys who play in Europe, a chance to compete in the Chase to the Investec Cup.”
And as the third round of the Telkom PGA Championship started, Bremner was one stroke off the lead. “Being close to the front going into the weekend is good, and I need to carry on doing what I’ve been doing well on the weekend,” he said.
Should he win, and should Fichardt stay down below 50th, the 250 Chase to Investec Cup points would catapult Bremner into third ahead of the final tournament, and improve his potential winnings by nearly R250 000 – incentive enough.
