Jaco driven by Investec Cup bonus

Jaco Ahlers wants to keep the good results coming over his next three weeks on the Sunshine Tour, because he’s looking to contest for the Investec Cup, which starts March 21st.

“I’m lying 15th in the Chase to the Investec Cup at the moment, and if you take away some of the Europeans who won’t come to play then I’m close to the top. I seriously can’t wait to play in the final,” he said.

13 tournaments offer up points for the Race to the Investec Cup and the field for the tournament will be made up of the top 30 points earners after the 13 tournaments. With only three more points events left before the finale, everyone wants a piece of the points pie.

The big man from Centurion has played 10 of the events and clocked up 362 points in the process, and those points have taken him to 15th in the Investec Cup ranking.

Ahlers’ eye was caught by the R5-million bonus pool on offer at the Investec Cup, of which the winner of the points competition will receive a cool R2-million.

This week’s Dimension Data Pro-Am has 250 points on offer for the winner, and Ahlers was ready to earn some more points after moving into a share of fifth on Saturday.

“The bonus is nice – it gives you good incentive. And the points style makes you play more consistent golf, because you can’t have one good week and then one bad week if you want to properly accumulate points,” he said.

The biggest move up the ranking can be made at the Investec Cup tournament, which carries a total of 6500 points. Ahlers had not lost sight of the finale, and made it very clear that the chase is on.

“A few points this week and a few points next week and I have a good chance at the cup. I’ve just got to keep the results flowing until then. I wouldn’t mind peaking for the Investec Cup, and it could really set up a great season for me,” he said.
