Trevor chasing Investec Cup bonus

Trevor Fisher Jnr is hunting for a share of the R5-million bonus pool in the Chase to the Investec Cup, and he’ll look to improve on his position during the final three tournaments before the Sunshine Tour’s summer-season finale.

Last week’s Africa Open champion Darren Fichardt holds the lead with his 751 point tally, but Fisher is only 273 points adrift in eighth place.

The Chase to the Investec Cup has 13 tournaments, starting with last year’s BMG Classic and ending with next month’s Telkom PGA Championship, which offer up points in the chase. The top 30 available points earners at the close of those 13 tournaments will gain entry to the R1-million Investec Cup tournament, but the tastiest prize is the R5-million bonus pool to be shared amongst that top 30. The final points winner will take home R2-million, while the 30th will take R40 000, so plenty is at stake.

A good performance in the Investec Cup itself, which will be played from March 21-24 at the Millvale, Rustenburg and Lost City golf courses, is also an important part of the chase: There are 6 500 points up for grabs for the 30 players, with the winner getting 500 – a substantial boost to someone who is close enough to the top of the table already.

Fisher’s campaign to improve his position ahead of the concluding Investec Cup tournament is in a crucial phase with this week’s Dimension Data Pro-Am, which carries 250 points for the winner out of a total of 3 000.

The 33-year-old has claimed points at every tournament except the Alfred Dunhill Championship, and on Friday at the Dimension Data Pro-Am Fisher shot a second-round 67 on The Links to reach the halfway mark at nine-under-par and join a tie for fourth.

While most of the top contenders for the Investec Cup are good performers in co-sanctioned events such as the Joburg Open and Africa Open, consistency has been the key to Fisher’s success.

For now he has two more rounds at the Montagu course at Fancourt, and he’ll push to continue his climb up the Investec Cup rankings.
